ECOLOGY through
RESPONSIBILITY

Sometimes, the best design is
the non-designed, and the true
mark of mastery lies in leaving
it just as it is.

When the young architect Alvar Aalto was commissioned in the 1930s to design a paper mill and an entire neighbourhood around it, he meticulously studied the natural conditions: the trees, rocks, and formations. He persuaded the industrialists to build without disrupting the natural landscape. A hundred years later, Sunila in Kotka stands as a testament to designing with respect and care for what nature has already created.

In the 1990s, designer Ilkka Suppanen sought structures that could provide extraordinary lightness. Rather than using traditional materials for a chair, he drew inspiration from the materials and attachment methods commonly found in sportswear. The chair, named Airbag, debuted as part of the 'Snowcrash' exhibition—a collaborative effort by four young Finnish designers—at the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan in 1997, receiving substantial media acclaim.

Less bad is not enough
– we must change how the whole
fashion industry works.”

Embracing sustainability demands a complete overhaul of the design and production value system. Particularly concerning materials, this entails veering away from current mainstream options like polyester and cotton, and favoring alternatives such as wool, organic linen, and innovative dispersed materials.

Responsibility extends beyond the production phase. The post-life of our material creations holds equal
—if not greater—significance compared to their initial creation.

Pikku-Finlandia  (Little Finlandia), a temporary pavilion, serves as a meeting hub during the renovation of the Alvar Aalto masterpiece, Finlandia House. Architects Jaakko Torvinen, Havu Järvelä, and Elli Wendelin centered their design on 95 whole wood columns as a key element. The structure comprises modular components, enabling disassembly and reconstruction in another location.
